A £12,500 ERSF grant to WheelPower was used to help stage the WheelPower National Junior Games.

The event, one of the most important in the charity’s sporting calendar, was attended by 250 disabled children aged between 11 and 18 years. All of the children had physical or mild sensory disabilities and usually are not catered for in mainstream school sports activities.

They tried a wide range of sports and were provided with information on how they can regularly partcipate after the Games. The event also provided the opportunity to form new friendships, learn new life skills from each other, and generally overcome the reticence that many of them have due to a feeling of being a it different from other children.

Most of the children stayed onsite at the Olympic Lodge, a purpose-built accommodation block for people with disabilities. Without the support of ERSF, WheelPower would have had to dramatically reduce the number of children attending the Games.
