SHINE: Support and Help IN Education

Educational initiatives which encourage children and young people from disadvantaged areas to raise their achievement received a £20,000 boost from ERSF.

The money granted to SHINE helped deliver programmes to 2,260 children and young people – covering costs for set up, staffing, teachers, resources, refreshments, educational trips and monitoring.

“The ERSF grant represents funding for 45 children and young people,” said a SHINE spokesman. “SHINE support included specialist one to one literacy tuition; university-led master classes for gifted mathematicians; Saturday enrichment programmes; academic coaching; alternative education for young people who have been excluded from school; science workshops in investigative and research techniques; after-school programmes with a clear academic element and designed to raise aspirations.”
